Thermal Imaging Uses:

Veterinary thermal imaging is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that has a wide range of uses in animal healthcare. By detecting and analyzing infrared radiation emitted from an animal's body, veterinarians can gain valuable insights into various conditions and identify areas of concern. This technology is particularly useful for detecting injuries, monitoring the healing process, assessing lameness, identifying inflammation or infection, and evaluating musculoskeletal disorders.

One significant application of veterinary thermal imaging is in equine medicine. Horses are prone to injuries and conditions such as tendonitis or muscle strains. Thermal imaging allows veterinarians to visualize heat patterns in affected areas, aiding in accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment plans.

Similarly, this technology finds utility in small animal practice, helping detect hidden sources of pain or inflammation that may not be immediately apparent during physical examination alone. By identifying hot spots or abnormal temperature variations on the body surface, veterinarians can pinpoint areas requiring further investigation or intervention.

Additionally, veterinary thermal imaging plays a role in monitoring post-surgical healing processes by tracking changes in temperature patterns over time. This allows veterinarians to assess the effectiveness of treatments and make informed decisions regarding further interventions.

Moreover, this non-invasive technique proves valuable for assessing hoof health in livestock animals such as cows or goats. By examining temperature disparities across the hoof surface, veterinarians can identify early signs of laminitis or other hoof-related abnormalities that require prompt attention.

In summary, veterinary thermal imaging offers a safe and efficient method for diagnosing various conditions affecting animals. With its ability to provide visual representations of heat patterns and temperature variations quickly and accurately, it enhances veterinary care by aiding diagnosis and facilitating targeted treatment plans for both large and small animals alike.

Evidence

“In veterinary medicine, [diagnostic thermal imaging] has shown promise and has been described for skin and soft tissue tumors in feline mammary gland tumors, osteosarcoma, mast cell tumors, and perianal tumors in dogs.” - Holanda et al., 2023

“Thermography has been widely accepted as a complementary diagnostic tool in human medicine due to its real-time, no-contact measurement, and painless monitoring of regions of interest, with no carcinogenic effects or needs for sedation.” - Lahiri et al., 2012
